 Preserve 24-hour urine with 15 g boric acid or 25 mL 6N HCl or 25 mL 50% acetic acid to maintain a pH below 3 (preferred) or collect without preservative if pH is below 6 and the sample is shipped frozen (acceptable). Keep urine refrigerated during collection, if preservative is not used.

Mix well. Estimate total collection volume from 24-hour urine container. Remove required aliquot. Record total volume on both aliquot tube and request slip (if applicable).
What to submit:
10 mL aliquot of 24 hour urine preserved with 15 g boric acid or 25 mL 6 N HCl.
Patient preparation:
 Patient should avoid food high in indoles: avocado, banana, tomato, plum, walnut, pineapple, and eggplant. Patient should also avoid tobacco, tea, and coffee for 3 days before specimen collection.
 
Specimen Processing Instructions:
10 mL aliquot of 24 hour urine.
Transport temperature:
 Refrigerated (preferred) or frozen if specimen contains no preservative.
 
Reference range:
 2-10 years: 8.0 mg/24 hr or less
> 10 years: 6.0 mg/24 hr or less
