Monday - Friday, first shift
Test includes:
Molecular detection of viral RNA/DNA from approved respiratory specimens for Influenza A virus (H1, H3, and non-typeable), Influenza B virus, Respiratory Syncytial virus (A and B), Parainfluenza virus types 1, 2, and 3, Human Metapneumovirus, Rhinovirus/Enterovirus, and Adenovirus.
Methodology:
Multiplex Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) with Laser/Bead detection
Synonyms:
Comprehensive viral studies, viral culture, PCR, Influenza A,
Influenza B, RSV, Respiratory Syncytial virus, Parainfluenza virus,
Human Metapneumovirus, Rhinovirus, Enterovirus, Adenovirus, rapid virus testing.
Clinical Significance:
The rapid and accurate detection of respiratory viral pathogens helps facilitate appropriate patient management. Viral detection is important to rule out bacteria as a cause of respiratory tract disease and limit antibiotic therapy. Identification of some viruses can also establish an etiology (e.g., parainfluenza and croup), guide appropriate antiviral therapy, provide a more accurate prognosis, and facilitate appropriate infection control isolation policies.
