Either serum separator tube (SST) or non-serum separator (plain) tube acceptable. If collecting specimen in microtainers, collect five FULL serum separator microtainers. Plasma is NOT an acceptable specimen.
What to submit:
1 mL aliquot of serum; minimum 0.5 mL, frozen.
Patient preparation:
None.
 
Specimen Processing Instructions:
Allow to clot. Centrifuge and submit 1 mL aliquot of serum.
Transport temperature:
Frozen (preferred) or refrigerated.
Specimen stability:
Stable 24 hours at 2-8°C or 1 month frozen at -20°C.
Rejection criteria:
Specimen will be rejected if stability limit has been exceeded or if specimen is hemolyzed, lipemic, or icteric. Plasma is not an acceptable specimen.
 
Reference range:
0-32.4 U/ml

Clinical Significance:
CA 15-3 assay is useful for monitoring the course of disease and therapy in metastatic breast cancer patients, and for the detection of recurrence in previously treated Stage II with greater than two positive lymph nodes, or Stage III breast cancer patients.
